SINCE taking the helm of Leader Universal Holdings Bhd, managing director Sean H'ng has implemented gradual changes in management philosophy to suit current times. H'ng tells StarBiz about the company's future prospects and challenges.

StarBiz: How has it been as the group managing director for the past seven months?

H’ng: It has been challenging. Since I took over in February, I have continued the efforts of my uncle, which was to streamline the business of the group.

The efforts have yielded results, as our half-year results have showed significant improvement over that of the same period last year.

We have also been prudently assessing the group’s position in the cable and wire manufacturing business and trying to formulate a forward going business plan.

My experience in the group for the past 10 years in many different positions and responsibilities, has helped me to understand the strength and weakness of the group’s business operations.

I am trying to steer the group along the path that my father and uncle have laid over the past 30 years, while at the same time taking into consideration the challenges of the ever-changing business environment.

StarBiz: When will the business plan be ready for implementation?

H’ng: We have already drawn up a preliminary plan, which will look at increasing our involvement in the power generation business in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

We will be finalising a detailed plan for execution soon.

StarBiz: Where does the group stand presently as a cable and wire manufacturer in the region?

H’ng: We are the largest cable and wire manufacturer in the country and in the region.

To maintain our position, we will continue to explore and develop new cable and wire products suited to the needs of the modern telecommunications and power industries.

StarBiz: Will the expansion in power generation business divert the group from maintaining its lead position in the cable and wire manufacturing business?

H’ng: No.

There will be no impact on our core cable and wire manufacturing business. What we are doing is to expand our earning base, as our power generation business, which is based on the “take or pay” model can provide the group with a steady income base.

The “take or pay” model means the consumer buys electricity from you all year round, as opposed to the other model, “take and pay,” which sells electricity to the utility companies only when there is requirement from them.

StarBiz: What is your management philosophy? Does it differ from that of your father's and uncle's?

H’ng: The foundation and objective of the group is the same regardless of who is at the helm.

Because of the challenges of the modern business environment, the management philosophy will have to change also.

For a group like Leader, which has many subsidiaries, it is best to manage each of the subsidiaries according to their needs and nature of business.

To enable the subsidiaries to be more efficiently managed, I have allowed the individual head of each subsidiary to be accountable and responsible with clear-cut objectives from the headquarters.

I am a very meticulous person who believes in teamwork.

I like to adopt a hands-on approach where I can play a role to enhance co-operation of my senior management team.
