Why Cambodia?
Until recently, Cambodia remained a
chaotic and generally difficult place to live and work. In 1999, the political
situation stabilized as the government made efforts to get the guns off the
street and to curb corruption. Through the first half of 2000, stability
continued and the economy further improved. Cambodian wages remain low.
Textile, handicraft and other labor intensive businesses may find this an
interesting place to get started.
Tourism continues to be strong with
statements as recent as April 22, 2004 by
Veng Sereyvuth, Cambodia's senior tourism minister, stating that "2003
was a record-breaking year in Cambodia's tourism with 750,000 foreign
visitors. Of this figure, 60 percent were from Asia, 25
percent from Europe and 10 percent from the US. For 2004 year,
Cambodia is targeting 1 million foreign visitors. "
The country is going to focus on intra-regional travel
and with infrastructure projects being finished and brought online such as
the new regional
Sihanoukville
Airport in April 2004 combined with the
internationally marketed
Sokha Beach Resort
and
Ochheuteal Beach and
Golf Resorts, investors have big plans and have spent
massive sums of money to bring Cambodia into the international arena.
