Heavy rains cause high death toll in Nepal
Red Cross officials say more than 420 people have died and another 173 are
reported missing in Nepal following severe flooding and landslides.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says
concern is growing for flood and landslide victims in Nepal as heavy monsoon
rains extend westwards across the country.
The organisation says nearly 260-thousand people have been badly affected by the
floods.
Thirty-two thousand people have so far been left homeless but with some areas
cut off the Red Cross says the full picture had not yet emerged.
In the north Indian state of Bihar, the death toll since July from floods has
risen to 275 with some seven-thousand-700 villages affected.
In Bangladesh, monsoon rains have triggered floods leaving several million
people homeless.
Flooding is also hitting Europe with 200,000 evacuated from the path of rising
floodwaters in the Czech Republic that submerged parts of the picturesque
capital Prague, and killed nine people across the country.
In Germany, Dresden in the east was the hardest hit from the muddy waters, while
bridges were swept away in Austria with half the country underwater and the
river Danube cascading over its banks in Vienna.
The inclement weather comes at the height of the tourist season, with resorts
and hoteliers since July already taking a severe hit from record rainfalls and
freak storms across much of the European continent.
