Thousands trapped in Assam floodwaters
An embankment on the outskirts of India's largest city in the northeast has
collapsed, trapping some eight thousand people in floodwaters.
Soldiers have been called to the area, on the outskirts of Guwahati, the capital
of Assam state.
Rescue workers say the current is very strong - complicating the rescue process.
80 percent of Assam is now under floodwaters.
Some 4,500 villages have been flooded, leaving 2.8 million people homeless.
More than 300 people died across South Asia this week in flooding and landslides
triggered by heavy monsoon rains, most of them in Nepal.
