Earth Russian scientists concerned by World Ocean level rise 25.04.2004, 06.25 MOSCOW, April 25 (Itar-Tass) - A specialist from the Russian Institute of Atmospheric Physics has expressed concern over a rising level of the World Ocean as a result of global warming. Igor Mokhov, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Tass “As computer modelling has shown, water level rises three millimetres a year”. The scientist said World Ocean level rose up to 20 centimetres in the 20th century. According to his forecasts, the figure will be much higher in the 21st century. “Island states and Bangladesh are the first to face the threat of being flooded,” Mokhov said. Besides, a minor melting of ice in the Arctic Ocean makes another contribution to a growing level of the World Ocean. The scientist believes the melting of ice will also affect Russia. “Separate parts of the Asian part of the country may find themselves under the water,” he stressed. However, there is no consensus of opinion among scientists on the reason behind that phenomenon. Some specialists believe cyclic fluctuations of temperatures are to blame, while others stick to the opinion that the process has a character of “a dangerous degradation” and is caused by the global warming. Renowned Russian oceanographer Alexander Gorodnitsky, professor at the Institute for Ocean Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has a rather pessimistic view of the situation. According to him, “St.Petersburg as well as many other coastal cities of Europe are facing a partial or total flooding within the next 20 to 30 years”. The renowned scientist believes the global warming will “trigger the melting of Arctic ice, as a result of which London, Hamburg and Amsterdam may repeat the fate of Venice.” Meanwhile, the adherents of both theories – an optimistic one and a catastrophic one – say that in any development, central Russia will remain intact.
