Banana Bar
136 Street and 49 street - near Mikado |
The atmosphere is bright and cheery, the music
played at a reasonable level, and the pool table well lit.
And there is more……… At the front of the place are four good
computers hooked up to high speed ADSL, and finally there is the
Menu……. A really LARGE menu! Western, Asian, Thai, Viet, Snacks,
Dinners and more. The food is excellent, well priced and most
important…… they actually have what is on the clear, well
designed menu. A mate even managed to think of something that
wasn’t on the menu, and it was quickly produced and well done. |

friendly staff will insure you receive lots of personal
attention.

"...freedom is only a word for nothing left to lose." is what I
started humming when I went in here for the 1st time. - Charlie |
Great pub and evening movie theatre located on
Phnom Penh's up and coming "yuppie" street, "240". Movies
start at 08:30 PM and cost $2.00 which includes a free soft drink.
If you like Thai beer, Singha is only a $1.00 a can. They have
done a fantastic job at giving the place the illusion of space with
their use of mirrors and curtains. I highly recommend this place. Nice pool table as well. |
|
FCC -
On the riverfront.
 |
The Foreign Correspondent's Club is one of the
more famous institutions in Cambodia. Unlike other FCCs in
places like Istanbul and Hong Kong, the ones in Cambodia are open to the public,
mostly because it is really a commercial enterprise that is a 'Club'
in name only. Great
views of the riverfront with decent food. A real place to people watch or to be
seen.

A photo montage
of one great Saturday afternoon at the Frog and Parrot! |
Opened in early March 2004. Caters to British
expats and travelers. British menu. Opens in the early AM for breakfast.
In August 2004, the bar got a more "upscale"
feel to it by getting some very comfortable chairs inside and
offering a nice selection of over 2 dozen cocktails. Decent
music as well and combined with a 4-7 PM happy hour that offers free
beer for half an hour, a great place to chill. (Free beer
{buy one, get one free} between 6-6:30 PM!) |
|
Ginger Monkey -
Close to the riverfront behind the FCC.
|
Co-owned by a Brit and a Scotsman (David and
Paul). Classy place to say the least as they leased the
building from a famous Cambodian artist who left the ceiling as it
was when it was an art gallery. Murals on all the walls
depicting scenes from Angkor are nothing less than amazing.
Opens at 5PM with a nightclub feel to it. Plush couches and
chairs and stools with deep red cushions make for a comfortable and
relaxing ambiance. Awesome pool room in what I would call the
"gallery" upstairs with even more comfortable seating for relaxed
conversation. Great sound system as well! Decent
selection of beers at a buck (including Thai Singha) with mixed
drink specials from 7-9 for only a $1.50. Highly recommended.
Opened in September 2003.

Heart of Darkness

The name says it all. This place has
been around a long time and has quite a reputation. It really
doesn't come 'alive' until after 11PM with dancing going on until
way in the morning. Frequented by just about everybody that is
anybody in the Phnom Penh club scene.
The club has undergone a
complete rebuild re-opened on December 7th 2005.

Rendezvous Restaurant and

Located at the corner of Sisowath
Quay and Street 108. |
Although a popular
place to hang out before catching one of the many nearby buses or
boarding the river ferries to destinations unknown, it can be a very
noisy place in which to attempt to have a conversation. The
times I have gone here and set outside have always forced me to move
to an inside table.

Shiva Shakti

Charles, Doug, Richard and Randy enjoying it all. March 2004

Randy
heading
to the Shiva Shakti for dinner on our motos.
|
Indian Cuisine - March 2004 - I had heard that
the "Shiva Shakti" at Independence Monument Circle (where Norodom
and Sihanouk intersect) was quite good and possibly the best Indian
food in Phnom Penh.
The restaurant is quite small and intimate but
quite elegant with waiters wearing traditional colonial dress and
providing excellent service.
Most main dishes are in the $5-$6 range which
by other standards here in Phnom Penh is a bit pricey but the
quality and ambience of the experience more than makes up for it.
A selection of fine Cuban cigars and wine are available also.
Open Tuesday through Sunday both for lunch and dinner. Most
major credit cards accepted. Call 012-813-817 for
reservations. |
