Battambang city is the provincial capital of Battambang province. Battambang (disappearing stick) sits along the Sangker River with the older, main section of the city including the business district, government buildings and main market on the west side. Many of Battambang's NGO offices are located on the east side of the river. Three bridges cross the river but only northernmost 'New Stone Bridge' on National Route 5 takes auto traffic. The other two are restricted to pedestrians and motorcycles. The eastern approach to the city on Route 5 is marked by a statue of Taa Dambong holding bat Dambong, the stick from which the city derives its name.
